Summary: Temperatures are running anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago.  The marine layer has shrunk down to 1,900 feet. This time yesterday it was approximately 3,000 feet.  The air aloft has also warmed with a freezing level of 16,000 feet.  All of this is due to a high pressure ridge over the eastern Pacific which is now edging inland.  This will create the pattern allowing for a return to summer-like conditions with temperatures rising to marginally above average over the weekend.  A dry west to northwest flow will continue, ensuring no moisture moves in from the south.

By Sunday, a very weak trough of low pressure will be off the California coast.  The only real impact on the valley will be marginally cooler temperatures as it’s possible shallow bursts of marine air may move down the valley from time to time.  Even so, temperatures will be only marginally below average, levelling off in to the mid to upper 90s.

In the medium range picture, stronger high pressure is expected after next week which could lead to a hot spell, but it’s too far off to have much confidence as of yet in that possible scenario.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear skies will continue Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: August 23 through August 29:  This model indicates a trough of low pressure will be off shore during the early part of the period.  It will then form another low over Nevada.  This poses little if any chance of precipitation, but it would maintain a westerly flow with a possibly deep marine layer which would allow temperatures to slide a bit below average.

August:  This model shows a significant trough of low pressure east of the Rockies and overall fairly strong high pressure dominating the western third of the U.S.  This should create above average temperatures for the month with a chance of the return of the monsoon from time to time.  Generally, temperatures will be above average with a slight chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms.

August, September, October:  The trend towards above average temperatures shows up once again through at least August and September.  October is more iffy.  As far as precipitation is concerned, conditions will remain near average.  Remember, the real rainfall season doesn’t begin until November so no significant amounts of precipitation are seen at this time.

Winds: Winds will be generally less than 15 MPH through Sunday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain: Expect dry weather for the foreseeable future.
