“What?! It’s National Dog Day? Adopt a dog! Feel the love!”
August 25, 2017
Summary: Hottest locations this afternoon will top the century mark then the heat will really get rolling over the weekend. Excessive heat warnings are out for most of southern California and up the central coast this weekend, but so far not the San Joaquin Valley.
We have two upper level highs which will merge and eventually be centered over Nevada and northern California. This will smash the marine layer, a process that has already begun. The layer at Monterey is only 1,200 feet deep. No marine air is getting into the valley. Winds at Fairfield are out of the southwest at just 9 MPH. this heat wave is going to be with us awhile. Usually, during very hot weather, we see moisture begin to creep up from the south or southeast, but models insist this will not be the case so just isolated thunderstorms at best can be expected on any given afternoon over the high country.
Triple digits will last through at least Thursday and possibly Friday, depending on model of choice. There is a possibility of a weak low moving inland to our north about Thursday which theoretically would bring temperatures down. Other models, though, show this system remaining too far to the north to have much impact.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Monday. Mostly clear skies will continue Monday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: September 1 through September 7: This model is rather interesting this morning. It indicates a moist, southerly flow will be moving into southern California from a possible tropical system not even on the weather map yet. On paper, central California is on the northern rim of activity. It’s too far out to put rain in the forecast, but it is a model one doesn’t see often. Temperatures will remain at least marginally above average.
September: This model shows upper level high pressure more dominant over the western U.S. There’s no clear indicator of above or below average rainfall as we move into the fall season. With that in mind, we’ll call for near average precipitation for the month.
September, October, November: It appears temperatures overall will rise to above average values for the bulk of this time frame. Upper level high pressure is also more dominant with precipitation, believe it or not, predicted to be somewhat near average.
Winds: Winds will be generally less than 15 MPH through Monday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.
Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.
