November 18, 2017 report

November 18, 2017

Summary:   Skies have cleared over central California.  The lone exception is portions of Kern County where low clouds are still banking up against the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains.  These clouds will slowly dissipate as the surface flow briefly becomes off shore.  Temperatures this morning are generally in the upper 30s to the mid 40s with a few isolated pockets in the central belt in the mid 30s.  Upper level  high pressure is now becoming established off the southern California coast and will be the central player this weekend.  The main challenge will be pockets of fog here and there during the later night to early morning hours, mainly north of Kern County.

A frontal system will move into northern California Monday, however models continue to back off on the strength of this system and the potential southern limit.  This will be a dry event for central California with the possible exception of the high Sierra near Yosemite.

After Monday, high pressure at the upper levels of the atmosphere will park southwest of San Diego and bulge northward, covering the eastern Pacific Ocean and California.  The main challenge after Monday will be pockets of fog during the later  night and morning hours, mainly up the center of the valley, but skies will generally be clear.

By next weekend, the storm track will be well to our north with no significant chance of precipitation for the foreseeable future.

Forecast:  Mostly clear skies through Sunday night with patchy morning fog and low clouds.  Partly cloudy Monday through Tuesday with patchy night and morning fog.  Mostly clear Tuesday night through Saturday with patchy night and morning fog.

Two Week Outlook: November 25 through December 2:  This model is indicating the storm track will migrate somewhat further south during this time frame.  Therefore, the risk of rain will be greater, especially after Thanksgiving.  The dominant flow in the upper atmosphere will remain out of the west or southwest, so above average temperatures will continue.

December:  This model is indicating a better than even chance of above average temperatures for  central and southern California all the way to the southeast with near to below average temperatures in the Pacific Northwest.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model does show better than average precip over Washington and Oregon and near average rainfall over central and northern California.

December, January, February:  If this model is to be believed, winter this year will experience somewhat above average temperatures from California, stretching eastward and southward.  Below average temperatures would prevail from the northern Rockies through the Plains states.  As far as California is concerned, precipitation would be near to marginally below average with temperatures marginally above average, but take all this with a grain of salt.

Winds:  Winds will be generally less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next week to ten days.

Frost information:  No chance of frost for the next week to ten days.
