November 19, 2017 report

November 19, 2017

Summary:   Skies generally cleared overnight, allowing strong radiational cooling to occur.  Most frost stations were in the mid 30s to the lower 40s this morning and the usual fog prone locations lived up to their reputation as places like Lemoore, Hanford, Tulare, and Merced were each reporting a quarter mile visibility or less.  Where the ground fog still exists, it will lift, burning off during the early afternoon hours.

The next weather system will spread light precipitation over northern California Monday.  The only impact from this system will be some increase in cloudiness which will inhibit fog formation tonight, especially over the northern half of the valley.  By late Tuesday, an upper high center will be developing to the southwest of San Diego with a ridge building northward through California.  This will nudge the storm track even further north into the Pacific Northwest.

Our region will remain well south of the main jet stream, meaning no cold air masses will invade the region for more than likely the remainder of the month.  In fact, the rest of the month may be dry, although there’s room for discussion for the last few days of the month as a couple of models break down the northern portion of the high.  As is typical with these patterns, inversions develop over the valley floor.  This will keep conditions hazy with areas of night and morning fog, mainly up the center of the valley and north of Kern County

Forecast:  Areas of fog and low clouds this morning, mainly north of Kern County.  Becoming  mostly clear this afternoon.  Partly cloudy tonight through Monday night with patchy night and morning fog.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Tuesday night through Sunday with areas of fog, mainly up the center of the valley north of Kern County with hazy afternoon sunshine.

Two Week Outlook: November 25 through December 2:  This model is indicating the storm track will migrate somewhat further south during this time frame.  Therefore, the risk of rain will be greater, especially after Thanksgiving.  The dominant flow in the upper atmosphere will remain out of the west or southwest, so above average temperatures will continue.

December:  This model is indicating a better than even chance of above average temperatures for  central and southern California all the way to the southeast with near to below average temperatures in the Pacific Northwest.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model does show better than average precip over Washington and Oregon and near average rainfall over central and northern California.

December, January, February:  If this model is to be believed, winter this year will experience somewhat above average temperatures from California, stretching eastward and southward.  Below average temperatures would prevail from the northern Rockies through the Plains states.  As far as California is concerned, precipitation would be near to marginally below average with temperatures marginally above average, but take all this with a grain of salt.

Winds:  Winds will be generally less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Wednesday

Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next week to ten days.

Frost information:  No chance of frost for the next week to ten days.
