January 11, 2018
Summary: Most of the low clouds dissipated during the day and are being replaced by scattered cumulous here and there. Most locations, though, are enjoying some sunshine. Temperatures are average 3 to 8 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. Very pronounced warming is occurring above us as Sandberg near 4100 feet is currently reporting a temperature of 63 which is 21 degrees warmer than yesterday. Freezing levels have jumped up to around 14,000 feet.
As upper level high pressure centered west of Baja begins to build a ridge northward, a warm air inversion…as usual…will develop above the valley floor beginning tonight. This will set the stage for fairly widespread fog and low clouds beginning Friday morning, and even more so Saturday through Monday mornings. Temperatures both day and night will be governed by the amount of fog and low clouds and where it clears.
Beginning Sunday, a zonal, or westerly, flow will develop over the eastern Pacific Ocean, shaving off the top portion of the high. Weak weather systems will affect the Pacific Northwest and northern California Tuesday and Wednesday and it still appears the high may buckle a bit for at least a chance of rain later Thursday into Friday.
Forecast: Partly cloudy tonight. Fog developing later this evening and becoming more widespread by sunrise. There will be extensive fog and/or low clouds Friday with afternoon clearing. Expect widespread night and morning fog Friday night through Monday night with clearing in most areas during the afternoon. Partly cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday with patchy morning fog. Increasing cloudiness Thursday with a chance of rain Thursday night.
