February 1, 2018
Summary: Visibilities this afternoon are running anywhere from 2 to 5 miles, depending on location. Temperatures have warmed up nicely. Readings are already in the mid to upper 60s and will top 70 at a few locations today, mainly in Kern County. The air aloft remains very warm by the standards of the season. The freezing level taken earlier today was 13,100 feet. With this in mind, I would say temperatures on the valley floor will range about 10 to 15 degrees above average. Skies are clear over all of central California with the exception of a very thin layer of cirrus clouds based at around 25,000 feet. These clouds are too thin to have any impact on daytime or nighttime temperatures.
Strong upper level high pressure just off shore will continue to dominate the weather over the western one-third of the U.S. for the next week to possibly ten days. One model is showing a trough of low pressure approaching from the west about the 16th of the month, but for now that’s the odd model out so the warm and dry forecast will continue.
Forecast: Areas of dense fog late nights through mid morning, mainly up the center of the valley north of Kern County with patchy fog elsewhere Friday morning. Otherwise it will be mostly clear with high, very thin clouds at times Friday afternoon through Sunday. Expect pockets of morning fog to continue each morning. Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday with areas of late night and early morning fog each day.
