February 19, 2018/frost update

February 19, 2018

Frost Update: it is pretty ugly out there in some areas tonight.  A few locations have already dropped to 28 degrees as early as 9:00pm.  The following are current temperature generally recorded between 9:45 and 10:00pm.  Madera 28, Sanger 27, Fowler 25, Orange Cove 29, Reedley 29, Orosi 29, Ivanhoe 27, Lindcove 27, Exeter 27, east Porterville 27, west Porterville 28, Steel Ranch 28 with numerous other locations between 30 and 32.

In Kern County, readings are generally in the low to mid 30s.  wind conditions have helped out there.  Along the west side, some areas are benefiting from winds and there is also the benefit of some upslope clouds mainly over the southwestern corner of Kern County and western Kings County.  Otherwise, skies are clear.  Dew points are ranging in the upper teens to the lower 20s which is lower than I thought.  This will allow temperatures to fluctuate up and down for the remainder of the night as winds come and go, but generally speaking the trend will be slowly downward.  Coldest locations will be possibly down to 20 to 22 degrees in those traditional cold spots.  Durations at or below 28 degrees will be as much as 10 hours, so as you can see we have a very serious situation tonight, at least in some areas.

Temperatures will not rise above freezing until between 8:30 and 9:00am tomorrow, if then.  Just briefly looking ahead, Wednesday morning has the potential of being equally as cold.  Winds and clouds will not be a factor so conditions will be more stable than they are tonight.  Readings Thursday morning could drop into the mid 20s to the lower 30s unless clouds arrive ahead of the next weather system.  At this point, though, I feel the clouds will hold off until Thursday afternoon.  We’ll go into the weekend and beyond in the morning report.

For now, all I can say is I wish the best for all of you, especially those of you already below the 28 degree threshold.
