Forecast

April 26, 2018/report

April 26, 2018

Summary: Some marine air is beginning to penetrate through the Delta as winds at Traverse Air Force Base are now out of the southwest at 23 MPH, gusting to 28.  So far, there is little evidence of these breezes making it over the Coast Range and into the west side of the valley.  That will begin to change later this afternoon or this evening as the marine layer, which is currently 2,300 feet deep, begins to deepen further and surges inland in response to a closed low which will be moving into northern California Friday.  This low will be  moisture starved with the strongest dynamics remaining over northern California.  Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible over the Sierra Nevada afternoons and evenings through the weekend as the low will be only very slowly moving towards the northeast and into the northern Great Basin.

The pattern will be complex from Monday through Tuesday evening.  Models are projecting a new low will develop off the Oregon coastline then shoot southward into southern California Tuesday.  Models show this system to also be lacking moisture, but active weather will still be possible Monday and Tuesday afternoons over the Sierra Nevada.  The low will shift eastward Tuesday night, allowing a ridge of high pressure to begin to build over the eastern Pacific and the western U.S. next Wednesday and into the following weekend for a continuation of dry weather.  Above average temperatures will also make a comeback at that time.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Friday night with occasional high clouds.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Tuesday night.  Mostly clear Wednesday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 2 through May 8:  This model is redeveloping a ridge pattern over the eastern Pacific and the western U.S.  This indicates we will have above average temperatures with very little, if any chance, of precipitation.

May:  This model is indicating upper level high pressure will be somewhat more dominant over the Desert Southwest, stretching into the eastern Pacific Ocean.  This pattern typically means generally above average temperatures and would also result in below average precipitation.

May, June, July:  Now we head into the heart of summer, which is typically dry for central California.  This model is indicating even drier than average conditions will prevail.  Upper level high pressure will be dominant, maintaining generally above average temperatures.

Winds: Winds will be generally less than 12 MPH this morning.  Winds this afternoon and evening will begin to increase out of the north to northwest along the west side at 10 to 20 MPH with local gusts to 30 MPH by this evening.  Winds tonight through Sunday will occasionally be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with locally stronger gusts, especially in western Fresno and Kings Counties.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Afternoon Dew Points Today: Low to mid 40s. Kern: Low to mid 40s.
