May 31, 2018

Summary: Temperatures this morning are running anywhere from ten to eighteen degrees cooler than yesterday at this time.  A robust on shore flow is currently underway in association with a trough of low pressure currently moving through.  Satellite imagery this morning shows coastal fog and low clouds all the way inland to the last range of mountains separating the valley from the coast range.  Winds at Pacheco Pass are out of the west at 25, gusting to 35 MPH with similar conditions through Cottonwood Pass.

Temperatures will struggle to reach 80 this afternoon with  highs possibly only in the high 70s at many locations.  Enjoy this breath of spring while it lasts as this trough will have already moved into the Great Basin by Friday, allowing a relatively strong upper ridge to begin to move in from the west.  Temperatures Friday will still be moderate as it will take a day to mix out the marine air then a big jump in temperatures will occur Saturday, peaking on Sunday with hotter locations possibly just clipping the century mark.

This high will also be temporary, as is many times the case in late May and early June.  Another weak trough will be approaching the west coast Monday for the beginning of a cooling trend.  This trough is quite weak and will have no weather associated with it. However, temperatures should lower to near seasonal averages by the middle of next week.

Medium range models point to just weak high pressure over the region with temperatures near to marginally above average.

Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds today and tonight, it will be mostly clear and much cooler.  Mostly clear Friday through Sunday with a rapid warming trend.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday with a slow cooling trend.

Two Week Outlook:  June 6 through June 13:  This model shows a trough of low pressure moving into the western states and remaining for a few days.  No precipitation would be expected with this pattern, however temperatures would lower to near seasonal values.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be  no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest today at 10 to 15 MPH.  there will be local gusts to around 30 MPH below coastal canyons.  Winds tonight will decrease to 5 to 15 MPH.  winds Friday through Sunday will be generally less than 15 MPH and generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.
