Forecast

June 8, 2018/report

June 8, 2018

Summary: Temperatures this morning are running 3 to 5 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago as the marine machine along the coast has been temporarily shut down by a weak ridge upwelling ahead of a fairly significant trough of low pressure moving into the Pacific Northwest.  This will allow temperatures this afternoon to rise into the lower 90s, which is only marginally above average.

That will come to a dramatic halt Saturday and Sunday as the aforementioned trough moves through northern and central California.  By late tonight, there will be about a 12 mb difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas, meaning significantly lower barometric pressure over the interior.  This will allow for a good push of marine air down the valley Saturday and Sunday for a good ten degree drop in temperatures, possibly even more from Fresno north.

Winds will also increase, mainly along the west side where local gusts to 30 are possible tonight and Saturday.

The significant differences in temperatures with swings up and down as we’ve experienced the past several weeks will continue for another week as a temporary high builds in from the west Monday through Wednesday for a rapid warming trend.  Temperatures should rise to above the century mark Wednesday only to cool off once again by the end of the work week as the latest trough moves in from the northwest.

Of interest also is our first hurricane of the season in the Pacific.  It’s several hundred miles south of Cabo San Lucas.  The center of the storm’s circulation should be near the southern tip of Baja by Thursday.  This could affect the Desert Southwest late next week. However, the winds aloft over central California will remain out of the west or southwest, ensuring no precipitation will affect our region.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday.  A little warmer today and cooler Saturday and Sunday.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Wednesday with a warming trend.  Cooling off again Thursday and Friday with mostly clear skies.

Two Week Outlook:  June 12 through June 18:  This model shows a trough of low pressure moving into the western states and remaining for a few days.  Temperatures under this pattern would lower to near seasonal values.  There will be no chance of precipitation.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds: Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH, mainly out of the northwest, today.  Winds tonight through Saturday evening will increase out of the northwest to 10 to 20 MPH with local gusts to 30 MPH possible, mainly along the west side.  Winds Saturday night through Monday will be generally out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH, becoming at or less than 15 MPH Sunday night and Monday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely
