Forecast

July 9, 2018/report

July 9, 2018

Summary: We’ll observe lots of heat this week along with occasional bouts of monsoon moisture.  Doppler radar at this hour is showing some scattered light showers over the Tulare County portion of the Sierra Nevada.  There are also isolated showers over the mountains and deserts of southern California.

Upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest now has winds aloft out of the southeast, putting central California in the moist southeast flow aloft.  Models show very little change for the remainder of the week with hot weather and periods of variable cloudiness and a daily chance of thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada, mainly in the afternoons and evenings.  There will even be a slight chance of showers over the Kern County mountains.

The high on some models increases in strength for the coming weekend.  It will be centered right over California with a bubble of warm, subsiding air above us.  Temperatures will heat up even more with readings well over the century mark over the weekend and well into next week.  It’s possible the only time we would end up with a day in double digits is when enough cloud cover is over the valley to block out the sun.  any day like this would have well above average overnight lows.

Even the two week  model is indicating upper level high pressure will be over much of the western United States with a continuation of above average temperatures and possible bouts of monsoon moisture working its way into central California.

Forecast: Partly cloudy at times through Thursday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Thursday night through Monday and continued hot.

Two Week Outlook:  July 14 through July 19:  This model indicates a continuation of persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest and California.  This pattern will favor monsoon moisture moving into our region from time to time for partly cloudy skies.  Thunderstorms will also be possible each day over the Sierra Nevada and possibly the Kern County mountains.  Temperatures will range above seasonal values.

July:  This model is indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest will be stronger than usual.  A fairly active monsoon is also indicated for periods of thunderstorms over the Sierra and hotter than average temperatures over the valley floor.

July, August, September:  Like the 30 day outlook, this model is indicating we’ll have a hot summer, moving into the early fall.  Above average precipitation is possible over southern California and the Sierra Nevada due to an active monsoon season with temperatures remaining generally above average for the next three months.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH through Thursday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely

Afternoon Dew Points Today: Low to mid 50s.  Kern: Mid to upper 40s.
