Forecast

July 19, 2018/report

July 19, 2018

Summary: The easterly tropical wave that moved through central and southern California yesterday has moved off shore.  The cloudiness associated with the wave has also moved off shore, revealing mostly clear skies over central California this morning.  The flow aloft remains out of the east today and, with daytime heating,  more scattered thunderstorms will break out over the Sierra Nevada and possibly the Kern County mountains and deserts.  Any threat of precipitation over the valley floor is now over.

By Friday, the high will have shifted further east, creating a southerly flow.  As it moves even further east, pressures aloft will lower somewhat, allowing temperatures to marginally fall.  The cooler locations over the weekend may actually dip below the century mark for a change, however next week looks like a sizzler as yet another strong high centers itself over Nevada and California.  The hottest of the next round of heat will likely be Tuesday and Wednesday.  Hottest locations could possibly climb to 108 to 110 on each day.

Medium range models indicate above average temperatures with readings remaining at least marginally above the century mark with occasional periods of high clouds as minor bouts of the monsoon work their way into our region from the southeast.

Forecast: Mostly clear with occasional cloudiness through Friday.  Mostly clear Friday night through Monday.  Mostly clear and hot Tuesday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 25 through July 31:  This time, this model continues to show above average temperatures throughout the western U.S., including California.  The position of the high will be such that the monsoon may not be as much as a factor as the high will actually block it, keeping it mainly in northern Mexico.

July:  This model is indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest will be stronger than usual.  A fairly active monsoon is also indicated for periods of thunderstorms over the Sierra and hotter than average temperatures over the valley floor.

July, August, September:  Like the 30 day outlook, this model is indicating we’ll have a hot summer, moving into the early fall.  Above average precipitation is possible over southern California and the Sierra Nevada due to an active monsoon season with temperatures remaining generally above average for the next three months.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH through Sunday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the foreseeable future.

Afternoon Dew Points Today: Upper 50s to the mid 60s.  Kern: Low to mid 60s.
