Forecast

August 27, 2018/report

August 27, 2018

Summary:  Temperatures Sunday afternoon rose into the upper 90s at several locations, but no location reached the 100 degree mark.  a reversal will occur again beginning today as a weak trough of low pressure starts to stretch from western Canada down into the northern Great Basin.  Once again, the on shore flow is increasing as the marine layer has now jumped up to 2,500 feet at Monterey.  At last report, winds at Travis Air Force Base in the Delta were out of the southwest at 20 MPH, gusting to 32.  Further south, Pacheco Pass was reporting winds gusting to 35 MPH.  how much temperature fall we’ll enjoy will be determined by how much of that  modified sea breeze pools on the valley floor.  It appears low to mid 90s are likely today and possibly even upper 80s to lower 90s Tuesday and Wednesday.

Satellite imagery indicates clear skies over California.  There are some  mid and high level clouds off the southern California coast which may make it far enough into the south valley to perhaps add a little bit of interest to the sky tonight and Tuesday.  Even so, skies will be generally clear.

The high has weakened a tad.  I noted the freezing level at Vandenberg has dropped to 14,800 feet.

By Thursday, the high will increase just a bit over California for perhaps about 2 degrees of warming, however the overall pattern through Friday shows a weak trough over the interior west and high pressure suppressed southward in to Baja.

The pattern for Sunday and Monday is a bit speculative at this time.  There is some indication a weak low will develop over northern California which, theoretically, could drop some monsoonal moisture from the south or southeast.  For now, we’ll keep that out of the forecast as it’s entirely possible this moisture will affect southern California, but not central California.

Forecast: Clear skies today.  Mostly clear tonight and Tuesday with possibly some mid and high level clouds mixing in.  mostly clear Wednesday and on through Monday of next week.

Two Week Outlook:  September 3 through September 9:  This model indicates we will be sandwiched between two weather systems.  The first is a low over the Pacific Northwest.  The other is a high center somewhere over the Desert Southwest.  This pattern will be conducive for monsoonal moisture to move through Arizona and possibly parts of southern California.  For now, it would look like a southwesterly flow aloft will prevail, giving central California mostly clear skies with marginally above average temperatures.

September:  This model indicates there will be a higher than active monsoon over the Desert Southwest and possibly central and southern California.  This typically does not affect the valley floor other than cloud cover, but could result in a larger number of days of thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and possibly even the Kern County mountains.  With generally high pressure over the southwest, temperatures will likely be somewhat above seasonal average.

September, October, November:  The first part of this time frame will see a more active than usual monsoon in place for above average rain over the Sierra Nevada and possibly the mountains and deserts of southern California.  October and November’s conditions aren’t as easy to determine.  At this time we’ll call for generally average values for both rain and temperatures.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly out of the west or northwest at 5 to 15 MPH through Tuesday with local gusts to near 20 MPH.  Winds along the Interstate 5 corridor could gust to around 30 MPH through Tuesday.  Winds Wednesday and Thursday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH with locally stronger gusts.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely.
