January 24, 2019
Summary: The ground fog which was up the center of the valley this morning has dissipated, leaving hazy afternoon sunshine and temperatures in the mid to upper 50s as of 1:00pm. Upper level high pressure remains anchored just off the Pacific coast and covers about the western one-fourth of the U.S. The latest arctic outbreak is diving southeastward into the Midwest and will have no impact on California’s weather.
The off shore high will drift eastward over the weekend and will be just about right overhead. Theoretically, this would be favorable for more night and morning widespread fog, possibly lasting through the day. However, we’re heading into late January and, yes, it is still fog season, but there’s a marginally reduced chance of most locations being locked in all day.
The high will continue to act as an effective block, preventing Pacific storms from entering California through the end of the month. More models are leaning towards a breakdown of the high about the first, allowing a trough of low pressure to move into the west about the second or third with, of course, an increasing chance of rain and higher elevation snow. The new two week model out this afternoon is also leaning towards above average precipitation for the first week in February.
Forecast: Mostly clear through Sunday with occasional high clouds and areas of night and morning fog, mainly towards the center of the valley north of Kern County. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday night through Thursday with areas of night and morning fog.

Winds: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with extended periods of near calm conditions through Sunday.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
Frost Discussion: Temperatures at the very coldest locations tonight will drop to 30 to 32 in those riverbottom and like locations with most locations between roughly 32 to 36. Even more modification will occur over the weekend with no frost expected.
The longer range outlook is indicating a mild pattern will continue. The latest arctic outbreak is now occurring east of the Rockies with more to follow next week. None of these should have any impact on California’s weather. Nothing on medium range models that would allow a particularly air mass to invade our region.
