Forecast

March 8, 2019/pm report

March 8, 2019

Summary:  Light showers continue over the mountains surrounding the valley with even a few sprinkles over the valley floor in Kern County due to upsloping.  Elsewhere in the valley, skies are generally partly cloudy.  The northwesterly flow down the valley is relatively cold but nothing unusual for early March.  A few locations tonight could dip into the lower 30s but no extensive frost or freeze situation is anticipated.

A weak and fast moving ridge of upper level high pressure will be overhead tonight and Saturday morning.  Clouds will be on the increase by Saturday afternoon as yet another low positions itself off the northern California coast by early Sunday morning.  This system continues to appear anemic as far as moisture amounts are concerned.  Still, the chance for light, scattered showers will spread over the area late Saturday night and Sunday with most locations recording less than .10.  even though this system originated in the north Pacific, it will not be as cold as yesterday’s system.

Yet another fast moving ridge of upper level high pressure will sweep in from the west Sunday night through Monday evening then clouds will again be on the increase ahead of a cold low that is shaping up to be an inside slider with most of the energy moving from north to south over the Sierra Nevada.  Light showers, though, will spread over the valley Tuesday and Tuesday night.  models continue to indicate that this will be the last precipitation producer for the valley for a while with dry weather projected to return Wednesday and last through at least most of next week.

Model models are showing temperatures in the lower 70s by a week from tomorrow with at least marginally above average temperatures for much of the following week.

Forecast:  Mostly to partly cloudy this evening.  Clearing after midnight with the exception of Kern County and southeastern Tulare County which may remain mostly to partly cloudy through the early morning hours.  Becoming mostly clear Saturday morning.  Increasing cloudiness Saturday afternoon.  A chance of scattered light showers Saturday night through Sunday.  Partly cloudy Sunday night through Monday.  Increasing cloudiness Monday night with a chance of showers Tuesday and Tuesday night.  partly cloudy Wednesday.  Mostly clear Wednesday night through Friday with a warming trend.

Winds: Winds this evening will be out of the northwest at around 5 to 12 MPH, decreasing to at or less than 6 MPH after midnight with periods of near calm conditions.  Winds Saturday through Monday will be in the 5 to 12 MPH range with periods of near calm conditions, mainly during the  overnight hours.

Rain:  The next chance of light scattered showers will arrive Saturday night and continue Sunday.  Most locations will record less than .10.  Dry weather will return Sunday night and Monday.  Late Monday night through Tuesday night, there will be another round of showers.  Dry weather will return Wednesday and continue for the rest of next week.  If models are correct, the following week will be dry, as well.

Frost Discussion: It will be chilly tonight, but again, nothing unusual for this point in March.  M ost locations will range between 34 and 42, depending upon cloud cover or the lack thereof.  Locations such as river bottom and other similar low spots may fall into the lower 30s for a couple of hours, but by and large, this is not a seriously cold night.

From Sunday morning and beyond, all locations will be above freezing, although we may see mid to upper 30s again Wednesday and Thursday of next week.  For now, though, it appears to be a garden variety cold night.

As we head into next weekend, a significant warming trend will commence.  Lows will be dragged up into the 40s with highs possibly topping out in the 70s by next Saturday.
