Forecast

March 29, 2019/pm report

March 29, 2019

Summary:  There is still a considerable amount of clouds over the valley portion of Kern County.  In fact, there’s enough cloud cover for Bakersfield to actually be 5 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago while most locations in Kings and Tulare Counties and points north are only down by about 1 to 2 degrees.  Even though upper level high pressure is building in from the west/southwest, the air mass is still generally quite cool with a freezing level of only 5,500 feet over Oakland and 6,300 feet above Vandenberg.  Those readings will begin to rise tonight as warmer air begins to move in aloft.  Warmer locations should hit 70 Saturday, the mid 70s Sunday with the warmest locations topping 80 on Monday.  This is in part due to high pressure but also due to a southeast flow moving up the valley ahead of the next trough of low pressure.

That trough will arrive after midnight Monday night and will be with us well into Tuesday evening.  This system is not particularly impressive and will drop just light amounts of precip from mainly Fresno County northward.  It’s possible parts of the south valley could remain dry, especially in Kern County.

From Wednesday through early Thursday dry conditions will prevail under another weak ridge of high pressure.  Later Friday through Saturday, an intense low will be off the Oregon and northern California coast.  Latest trends on models show a strong cold front driving down the valley which may result in fairly significant amounts of rain from especially Fresno County north.  For now, though, it appears at least some rain will reach all the way into Kern County.  Northern California could actually experience one of the strongest storms of the winter/spring season.  A few lingering showers are possible Sunday followed by at least two dry days on Monday and Tuesday.

Forecast:  partly cloudy this evening in the south valley.  Otherwise, it will be mostly clear with occasional high clouds through Monday.  Increasing cloudiness m onday night with a chance of showers, mainly after midnight and mainly from Fresno County north.  A chance of showers Tuesday through Tuesday evening, mainly from Fresno County north.  Becoming mostly to partly cloudy Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.  Mostly clear to partly cloudy Wednesday afternoon through Thursday night.  increasing cloudiness Friday.  Rain likely from Fresno County north Friday night and Saturday with showers spreading into the south valley.  Showers Saturday night. partly cloudy Sunday with possibly lingering morning showers.

Winds: Winds this evening, mainly along the west side, will be out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts, becoming light after midnight.  Winds Saturday through Monday will be generally at or less than 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and 7 MPH nights and morning hours with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through Monday evening.  The chance for light showers will begin to increase after midnight Monday with a decent chance of showers from Fresno County northward and only a small chance as far south as Kern County.  Precipitation will come to an end sometime Tuesday night with dry weather Wednesday through Thursday night.  the chance of rain from a strong winter type storm will increase from Fresno County north Friday afternoon, spreading southward during the night.

Periods of rain will continue Saturday into Saturday night with a few lingering showers Sunday.  This could be a significant weather event for the northern half of the state, tapering off south of Fresno County.  Even so, precipitation will spread all the way into Kern County.
