April 8, 2019
Summary: Even despite the high clouds today, temperatures may actually surpass yesterday’s upper 70s to lower 80s readings. Temperatures Tuesday will drop a good ten to thirteen degrees as a fast moving cold front slides down the valley. The parent low will move into Oregon and northern California where significant amounts of precip will fall, especially over the mountain areas. As the front moves into central California, it will weaken rapidly but there may be enough upper air support for light showers, mainly along the east side north of Kern County.
As the system moves into the Great Basin, pressures will rapidly fall over the interior and will rise off shore. This will set the stage for strong, gusty winds Tuesday into Wednesday. With such strong differences in pressure between the coast and the Great Basin, northwest winds along the west side may surpass 40 MPH with 30 MPH winds elsewhere. Tomorrow will be one of those days where there will be plenty of dust in the air.
A brief ridge will build in Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning then the next in this endless parade of low pressure systems will again sweep into Oregon and northern California Thursday night and Friday for a chance of light showers with another round of gusty winds.
Weak upper level high pressure will build in for the weekend for a marginal warming trend. By early next week, the high will migrate several hundred miles off shore, setting up a west/northwest flow into California. Even though the chance of precipitation will be minimal, there will still be that chance from time to time as disturbances embedded within this flow move into the northern half of California.
Forecast: Variable high cloudiness today. Increasing cloudiness tonight with light showers becoming likely late tonight and Tuesday morning. Partly cloudy, breezy, and cooler Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Increasing cloudiness Thursday afternoon leading to a chance of light showers Thursday night and Friday morning. Partly to mostly cloudy Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday afternoon through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: April 15 through April 21: This model doesn’t really have any direction either way as far as precipitation goes, nor for temperatures. There will be a small chance of light showers sometime during this period with temperatures close to seasonal averages.
Winds: Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH today and mainly out of the northwest this afternoon and evening. Winds late tonight through Tuesday evening will be strong and gusty out of the northwest at 15 to 30 MPH can be expected along the east side and in Kern County. From Fresno County north and along the west side, gusts to 40 to 45 MPH are possible with areas of blowing dust. Winds will decrease to 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts later Tuesday night through Wednesday with generally light winds returning later Wednesday night and Thursday.
Rain: The chance of light showers will begin to pick up later tonight and Tuesday morning as a fast moving cold front scoots through. The front will not be carrying much water with most locations recording about .10 or less. Dry weather will quickly return Tuesday afternoon through Thursday. Models are very inconsistent about a low pressure system and its placement for Thursday night and Friday. For now, the best course of action is to call for a chance of showers for Thursday night and Friday.
Dry weather will return Friday night and continue through at least the early part of next week.
Medium range models show periodic chance of rain for the northern 1/3 of California with a slight chance further south later next week.
