Forecast

April 18, 2019/report

April 18, 2019

Summary: Expect another significant jump in temperatures today as readings move from the mid to upper 70s yesterday to the mid to upper 80s today.  At least the warmest locations will meet and greet the 90 degree mark Friday.  Upper level high pressure will be right overhead this afternoon through Friday, but changes are afoot as the latest trough of low pressure to move out of the eastern Pacific will do so Saturday.  Light showers will develop along the Sierra Nevada, but no precipitation is expected on the valley floor.  Significant cooling will occur Saturday and Sunday as cooler air moves in aloft and fairly strong differences in pressure set up between the coast and the interior west.  Generally, winds will be out of the northwest Saturday at 10 to 20 MPH, but local gusts to 30 MPH or more would not be a total shock along the west side.

By Monday, the trough will have moved into the Midwest, allowing a strong ridge to build eastward from the eastern Pacific and into California.  This will generate yet another rapid warming trend with temperatures approaching 90 as early as Tuesday and eclipsing the 90 degree mark in most locations Wednesday.

Medium range models continue to indicate dry weather until the 28th and 29th when some models show a low moving right into California for at least a small shot at showers.  Others, though, don’t show this feature.  For now, I’ll go with a dry forecast until a trend shows up on modeling information.

Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear through Friday night.  mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Sunday night.  mostly clear Monday through Thursday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  April 24 through April 30:  Models continue to indicate generally dry conditions as upper level high pressure will be the most dominant feature during this time frame.  Overall, temperatures will generally be above average.

April: This model shows April will be fairly typical with near to marginally above average temperatures during the month.  This model also indicates there will be equal chances of above or below average precipitation. In other words, the road map on this model is rather vague.

April, May, June: Like the April projection, this model really has no dominant features that would indicate either above or below average temperatures, although the overall pattern should result in marginally above average readings.  We are moving into the dry season, and this model indicates equal chances of above or below average rainfall.  As we move forward, this will become a moot point.

Winds:  Winds will be at or less than 12 MPH through Friday night.  Winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH by midday Saturday with local gusts to 35 MPH, mainly along the west side, diminishing by late evening.  Winds Sunday will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH, becoming light Sunday night.

Rain: Expect dry weather to continue for the next week to ten days.
