April 25, 2019
Summary: Strong upper level high pressure is centered just off the southern California coast this morning. The high covers California and most of the interior western United States. Today will be very summer-like with widespread readings in the mid-90s. it’s possible isolated hot spots could move into the 97 to 98 degree range, but not nearly enough for record values. The high will begin to slowly weaken beginning Friday in response to an approaching system moving into the Pacific Northwest. It will have little impact on valley weather, though. More importantly is a weak upper low still well off the southern California coast which models show moving inland Sunday night and Monday near the California/Mexico border.
This system is still projected to be moisture starved, however Kern County should be on the northern rim of the circulation pattern with this storm. The mountains may add enough lift for scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms with even a slight chance of isolated light showers over the valley floor, mainly over Kern County and even then I would put the chance of measurable rain at no more than 20%. This system will not hang around long as it jets into the Desert Southwest Tuesday.
Next week will be much different as a predominant through of low pressure will be over the Pacific Northwest with only weak high pressure over central and southern California. Some models show the development of a significant low along the northwest coast around the 10th, but that far out, we’ll take a wait and see attitude pertaining to adjustments in the forecast.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Saturday night. becoming partly cloudy Sunday. Variable cloudiness Sunday night and Monday with a slight chance of sprinkles or isolated light showers, especially over Kern County. Partly cloudy Monday night. mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Tuesday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: May 2 through May 8: This model is indicating the first week in May will have a better than even chance of measurable rain. Temperatures will fall back to near seasonal.
May: As we now enter the dry season, precipitation chances, according to this model, will be that of most Mays, in other words, near seasonal. Nothing too dramatic shows up as far as temperatures are concerned with readings near to marginally above average.
May, June, July: As we move through the late spring through mid summer, precipitation opportunities will be typical, in other words, not very high and that’s especially true for June and July. For this 90 day period, temperatures are projected to run somewhat above seasonal values.
Winds: Winds will be at or less than 15 MPH through Saturday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings. Winds Sunday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts along the west side.
Rain: Dry weather will continue through Sunday. There will be a small chance of scattered light showers over mainly Kern County Sunday night and Monday as a weak low moves through southern California. The chance of measurable rain at any given location will be about 20% or so. If measurable rain does happen to occur, less than .10 seems plausible. Dry weather will return Monday night and, if models are correct, will continue for the remainder of next week.
