Forecast

June 17, 2019/report

June 17, 2019

Summary: Other than some high clouds left over from thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada  yesterday afternoon, skies are generally clear.  In the upper atmosphere, a benign upper low is centered over the southern Sierra Nevada and will drift to a position off the southern California coast Tuesday.  The impact on the valley will be minimal.  Generally clear skies will prevail, however with a northeast flow aloft developing, debris clouds from developing afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada will arc out over the valley from midafternoon.  As thunderstorms dissipate over the Sierra Nevada during the afternoons and evenings, mostly clear but possibly partly cloudy skies can be expected during the overnight hours.

Meanwhile, upper level high pressure off the northern California coast will build into Oregon and northern California Tuesday through Wednesday.  This will enhance the off shore flow, driving temperatures above the century mark in  many areas Tuesday and Wednesday.

Beginning Thursday, a strong low (considering the time of year) will develop over the Pacific Northwest then will drop into the interior west Friday and Saturday.  This will create a strong onshore flow, allowing a great deal of modified marine air to move through the Delta and other gaps and passes along the Coast Range for significant cooling beginning Thursday.  Friday and Saturday will be the coolest days we’ll see for a while.

Most of the medium range models this morning for next week indicate predominantly low pressure over the interior west, resulting in near to even somewhat below average temperatures.

Forecast: Mostly clear during the morning hours today and Tuesday with mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy skies from midafternoon through the overnight hours.  Mostly clear Wednesday and on through Monday of next week.

Two Week Outlook: June 24 through June 30:  This model has flip flopped a bit and indicates a trough of low pressure will be the more dominant feature during this time frame.  If this happens, a welcome cooling trend will occur with temperatures near to possibly marginally below average with the usual dry conditions continuing.

June: The first month of meteorological summer indicates temperatures will only be marginally above average over northern and central California.  In other words, patterns for early summer should be fairly typical.  The usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

June, July, August: If this model has any grip at all on the pattern for summer of 2019, it is the fact that it will be a hot one, even hotter than usual.  As a more persistent ridge remains over the west and lower pressure over the middle of the country the usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH late mornings through early evenings and mainly out of the northwest through Wednesday.  During the night and  morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 8 MPH with possible near calm conditions.  Winds Thursday will increase out of the west then northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH possible, mainly along the west side.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
