Forecast

July 8, 2019/report

 July 8, 2019

Summary: Low pressure is currently centered over Washington state and as expected has developed a trough down into northern and central California.  As a result, a strong onshore flow has set up.  The depth of the marine layer at Monterey this morning is more than 3,000 feet which means marine air is having no problem penetrating the San Joaquin Valley.  Currently, winds at Travis Air Force Base in the Delta are out of the  southwest at 18 MPH, gusting to 28 while further south at Pacheco Pass, winds are out of the west sustained at 21 MPH.  From Madera County northward, temperatures may not even reach the 90 degree mark this afternoon.

This day in 1905, the temperature in Fresno reached 115 degrees and this still stands as the hottest day ever recorded for that locale.

This refreshing cool down we’re enjoying typically do not last long in the month of July and hot weather will arrive later this week.  Models have been showing strong upper level high pressure migrating from Texas Tuesday to near the Four Corners region by Friday.  Central California will be on the northwest flank of this high, driving temperatures into triple digits possibly as early as Friday, but  more so Saturday and Sunday.

The winds aloft will briefly be southerly Friday and Saturday which may allow a limited amount of monsoon moisture to work its way into southern California and possibly up the Sierra Nevada for a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the high country Friday and Saturday afternoons.  Only a few high clouds are expected over the valley floor.

Some modifications will occur by early next week as the high begins to flatten out in response to low pressure moving into the Pacific Northwest.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Thursday.  Mostly clear and hot Thursday afternoon through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: July 15 through July 21:  The trend the past couple of model runs is for dominant high pressure over the western one-third of the U.S.  This will result in above average temperatures during this time frame with the usual dry conditions continuing.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds through tonight will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with local gusts to near 25 MPH, especially along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Winds Tuesday through Thursday will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH afternoons and evenings with locally stronger gusts and 5 to 12 MPH during the night and morning hours.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
