Forecast

July 27, 2019/report

July 27, 2019

Summary: Temperatures are actually running 3 to 5 degrees cooler at most locations than 24 hours ago.  That is rather deceiving, however, as yesterday at this time there was cloud cover while this  morning, skies are clear.  The big high over the Four Corners region has migrated into southwest Arizona and will be pushing into southern and central California Sunday.  This will drive temperatures even higher.  Temperatures will reach their pinnacle that day.

The flow aloft now is out of the west/southwest and it has efficiently moved the monsoon well south and east of central California.  With the position of the high, the monsoon will be forced to rotate from east to west across northern Mexico and eventually into the waters off of Baja, leaving California unscathed.  Temperatures Sunday at the hottest locations could actually exceed 110 with most locations between 106 and 109.

Things will begin to turn around Monday as the high shifts back into the Desert Southwest, reaching the Four Corners region by Tuesday.  In the meantime, a weak trough of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest and  northern California, allowing for an intrusion of modified marine air into the valley.

Temperatures Tuesday should return to near seasonal averages and pretty much remain in the upper 90s through Friday.  Next weekend, the Four Corners high will  move westward again for the possibility of the next round of triple digits.  This pattern could also allow monsoonal moisture to creep in from the south, something we’ll study as we progress through next week.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies and hot through Monday.  Mostly clear and less hot Tuesday through Friday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday night and Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: August 3 through August 9:  Overall, upper level high pressure remains anchored over the Desert Southwest with an active monsoon  moving into the Desert Southwest, the Great Basin and the Sierra Nevada.  There’s always a slight chance of sprinkles during the monsoon season, but overall, temperatures will remain dry with above average temperatures.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds will be generally in the 5 to 12 MPH range and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.  Periods of near calm conditions can be expected nights and mornings through Tuesday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to ten days.
