Forecast

July 30, 2019/report

July 30, 2019

Summary: Temperatures are running anywhere from 5 to 9 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago north of Kern County.  In Kern County, readings are a degree or two cooler.  Even though yesterday was hot, readings were 4 to 5 degrees lower than the previous day.  The hottest location I could find in the valley was 105 at Maricopa.

The cooler conditions this morning are due to somewhat lower pressures aloft and a shallow intrusion of modified marine air into the valley.  Readings this afternoon will generally top out in the upper 90s.

The pattern will be quite bland through the remainder of the work week with a dry southwesterly flow aloft.  The monsoon is alive and well with the latest surge  moving into Arizona and southeast California.  However, the southwest flow between the trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest and upper level high pressure over New Mexico will keep skies mostly clear.

It appears our next heat wave will begin Sunday as the high currently over New Mexico begins to shift back towards the west.  Readings on Sunday will begin to top the century mark and probably end up in the 102 to 106 degree range Monday through Wednesday.

The clockwise flow around the high will also turn the winds out of the south, which is favorable for transporting monsoonal moisture back into central California possibly as early as Sunday, but with a greater risk from Monday on.  For now, no precipitation is expected over the valley floor, but afternoon and evening thunderstorms will become more likely over the southern Sierra Nevada and the mountains and deserts of southern California.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Saturday night.  mostly clear and hot Sunday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday night through Tuesday and continued hot.

Two Week Outlook: August 5 through August11:  Overall, upper level high pressure remains anchored over the Desert Southwest with an active monsoon  moving into the Desert Southwest, the Great Basin and the Sierra Nevada.  There’s always a slight chance of sprinkles during the monsoon season, but overall, temperatures will remain dry with above average temperatures.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH afternoons and evenings with local gusts to near 20 possible.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to ten days.
