August 9, 2019/report

August 9, 2019

Summary: It is a rather refreshing morning out there as most ag locations north of Kern County have cooled into the low to mid 50s out there with lower 60s in Kern County.  A fairly robust closed low is located roughly 250 miles to the west of the Oregon/California border.  As the low progresses closer to the coast, the onshore flow will increase, allowing not only synoptic cooling but cooling by modified marine air which surged down the valley overnight.  Most locations north of Kern County will struggle to reach 90 this afternoon and even in Kern County, just lower 90s can be expected.  Saturday will be the mildest day with most locations only in the upper 80s.

The low itself will move inland through extreme northern California Saturday then will weaken rapidly and move off into the northern Rockies Sunday and Monday.  Monday will be turnaround day as temperatures head north once again. A zone of high pressure will develop, stretching from Arkansas in the east to off the southern California coast on the west.  Temperatures by Tuesday and Wednesday will push the century mark but as of now this high does not appear to be strong enough for widespread triple digits.

The flow aloft will continue out of the southwest, keeping the monsoon well to the east of central California. By Thursday and Friday of next week, most models depict a new trough of low pressure along the west coast for possibly another round of below average temperatures which, theoretically, could last through next weekend.

Forecast: Mostly clear but occasional high clouds through tonight and cooler.  Mostly clear and mild Saturday through Sunday.  Mostly clear with a warming trend Monday through Wednesday.  mostly clear and cooler again Thursday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: August 16 through August 22:  This model is indicating a trough of low pressure will be along the west coast with above average precipitation over the Pacific Northwest.  With a little bit of luck, central California will enjoy below average temperatures during this time frame with dry conditions continuing.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with gusts to 20 MPH through Saturday.  along the west side, and especially along the Interstate 5 corridor, local gusts in excess of 30 MPH are possible.  Winds Sunday and Monday will be generally in the 5 to 15 MPH range.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to ten days.
