Forecast

August 23, 2019/report

August 23, 2019

Summary: Upper level high pressure is centered just off the California coast this morning.  The air aloft has certainly warmed as the freezing level has  jumped up to 17,700 feet while the marine layer, which has been efficiently moderating temperatures recently, has shrunk back to 1,000 feet.  The modified sea breeze is no longer filtering into the San  Joaquin Valley.  Winds through Pacheco Pass and at Travers Air Force Base in the Delta, were light at last report.

The clockwise flow around the high has the winds aloft out of the north which is a very dry flow.  With another high center over Sonora, Mexico, no chance exists for monsoonal  moisture to work into California.

Temperatures over the weekend will generally range from 99 to 104 then perhaps up a degree or two more Monday and Tuesday as the high strengthens just a tad.  Tropical storm Ivo is centered 545 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas.  Models still forecast this storm to move north/northwest along the Baja coastline, eventually centering roughly 400 miles west of the northern Baja, California coast by Monday.  By that time, this system will be a depression.  It will then move northwestward off the California coast then will become just a weak low center.  We may see some mid and high level clouds from this system about Wednesday or Thursday as the remnants are swept eastward by a trough of low pressure moving through the Pacific Northwest and northern California Thursday and Friday of next week.

Forecast: Clear and hot through Tuesday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Wednesday through Thursday.  Mostly clear Thursday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: August 30 through September 5:  Above average temperatures can be expected during this time frame.  There is indication on this  model that we could see a visit from the monsoon or even the possibility of tropical moisture moving into at least southern California.  The chance of rain will remain very low with the exception of the mountain areas.  Nevertheless, eyes to the south would be wise as we move into the latter part of the month.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and mainly out of the northwest through Monday.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 8 MPH with possible periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
