Forecast

August 24, 2019/report

August 24, 2019

Summary: Upper level high pressure is centered just off the northern California coast this morning.  It will extend inland over California Sunday through Wednesday.  eventually, it will hook up with another high center located over the Desert Southwest, blocking any potential subtropical moisture from moving into California through that point.  The marine layer has deepened somewhat along the coast to 2,300 feet.  There is some modified marine air moving through the Delta as winds at Travers Air Force Base are sustained at 21 MPH.  Also, winds at Pacheco Pass are gusting to 24 MPH.  That may actually lower temperatures a degree or two, mainly in the central portion of the valley, but even so, temperatures will still tease with the century mark.  Temperatures from 100 to 105 will be common Sunday through Wednesday.

Tropical storm Ivo is located 390 miles west/southwest of the southern tip of Baja this morning.  Satellite imagery indicates this is a pretty pathetic tropical system.  It’s now forecast to become a depression tonight and dissipate off the central Baja coastline Monday and Tuesday, leaving  California completely alone.

Medium range models the past few days have been hinting at the triumphant return of the monsoon into at least southern California Thursday as upper level high pressure over the Four Corners region expands over the western states, turning the winds aloft southerly.  We’ll have to study this as we go along, but for now no precipitation is expected.

Forecast: Clear skies and hot conditions through Wednesday night.  mostly clear and a little cooler Thursday through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: August 30 through September 5:  Above average temperatures can be expected during this time frame.  There is indication on this  model that we could see a visit from the monsoon or even the possibility of tropical moisture moving into at least southern California.  The chance of rain will remain very low with the exception of the mountain areas.  Nevertheless, eyes to the south would be wise as we move into the latter part of the month.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and mainly out of the northwest through Tuesday.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 8 MPH with possible periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
