Forecast

August 27, 2019/report

August 27, 2019

Summary: Temperatures this afternoon will soar into the 101 to 106 degree range and will definitely be the hottest day of the week.  Upper level high pressure is centered right along the northern California coast and this continues to suppress the marine layer.  The marine layer currently has a depth of 1,000 feet at Monterey.  The air aloft is quite warm.  For example, at Sandberg above the Ridge Route at 4,100 feet, the 6:00am temperature was 72 while even as high as 8,200 feet at Bear Peak the reading was 66 degrees.  The balloon sounding above Oakland this morning showed a freezing level of 17,100 feet.  There is also a very weak low center off the central coast which is actually the remnants of former tropical storm Ivo.  Models show this feature moving inland through northwest California Thursday.  It’s possible enough high level moisture may be available for some high clouds and perhaps even an isolated thunderstorm or two along the spine of the Sierra Nevada.  The main center of high pressure will be suppressed into southern California Friday and Saturday, lowering temperatures into the upper 90s, which is still marginally above average.

Upper level high pressure will develop over the Four Corners region Sunday through Tuesday of next week, turning the winds aloft over southern California southerly and out of the south/southwest over central California.  This pattern typically is favorable for monsoonal moisture to work into southern California and possibly the Sierra Nevada, but no precipitation is expected over the valley.

Forecast: Clear skies today and hot.  Mostly clear with occasional high clouds Wednesday through Thursday with a slow cooling trend.  Mostly clear Thursday night through Sunday.  Mostly clear with occasional high clouds Monday through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: September 2 through September 8:  This model is showing a reasonably decent chance of monsoonal moisture working its way northward into central and southern California.  Typically this pattern sets off afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and, on rare occasions, sprinkles or isolated showers over the valley.  Overall, most locations will remain dry.  This regime will result in generally above average temperatures.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and mainly out of the northwest through Friday.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 8 MPH with possible periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
