Forecast

August 30, 2019/report

August 30, 2019

Summary: The amount of modified marine air flowing into the valley has slowed, even though the marine layer itself is still roughly 3,000 feet deep.  Strong upper level high pressure is sitting over southern California, but from Kern County northward, the high aloft is deeper due to disturbances moving into the Pacific Northwest.  The freezing level above Vandenberg remains high with the latest overnight reading at 16,200 feet.

Over the weekend, the high over southern California will migrate to a position near the Four Corners region of the Desert Southwest.  This will turn the winds aloft out of the south and this will begin to move monsoonal moisture northward into southern California beginning Sunday.  The chance for isolated to even scattered showers and thunderstorms will begin to increase, especially over the mountains and deserts of southern California.  Models do show a minimal amount of this moisture moving up the Sierra Nevada late Monday through Wednesday.  this, in conjunction with a low pressure system off the northern California coast, will possibly set off thunderstorms over the high Sierra, mainly Tuesday through Thursday afternoons with possibly occasionally partly cloudy skies at times over the valley floor.

Temperatures will warm a bit over the weekend with hottest readings around the century mark through Tuesday.  By mid week, the low of the north coast will move northeastward into Oregon by Friday.  This should push some marine air over the valley for our next cooling trend.

Forecast: Clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: September 5 through September 11:  This model is showing a reasonably decent chance of monsoonal moisture working its way northward into central and southern California.  Typically this pattern sets off afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and, on rare occasions, sprinkles or isolated showers over the valley.  Overall, most locations will remain dry.  This regime will result in generally above average temperatures.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH, mainly along the west side through today.  During the night and morning hours, winds will be mainly in the 5 to 10 MPH range and mainly  out of the northwest.  Winds Saturday through Monday will generally range in the 5 to 12 MPH range out of the northwest.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
