Summary: currently, there is an 8 millibar difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas. In other words, barometers are lower over the interior and this tugs the marine layer inland. The flow aloft has become westerly behind a weak low center which moved northeastward from off the northern California coast and into Oregon late yesterday afternoon. Now, we have a considerably deeper trough of low pressure just off shore and it will move inland today into early Tuesday, moving cooler air in aloft and increasing the difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas to roughly 10 millibars. This will allow strong surges of modified marine air to crash over the Coast Range and into the valley from time to time. A reinforcing low will move inland late Tuesday into early Wednesday, continuing the strong onshore flow.
Tuesday appears to be the coolest day in this series. Some locations will only warm into the lower 80s which is more reminiscent of mid October than early September. Thursday will be turnaround day as upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest will begin to expand over California with temperatures possibly moving into the upper 90 this coming weekend. We will have to watch this closely, however, as some models are showing a new low moving into the Pacific Northwest and northern California for the possibility of another cooling trend. One model actually suggests showers will fall over the northern part of the state, but for now there’s no reason to add a chance of showers to the forecast for central California.
Forecast: Clear and mild through Wednesday. clear skies with a warming trend Thursday through Monday of next week.

Two Week Outlook: September 16 through September 22: This model is indicating a blanket of upper level high pressure will be over the western one-third of the U.S., resulting in above average temperatures. Precipitation chances will remain extremely low.
August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest. The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley. The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.
August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other. As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months. This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.
Winds: there will be periods of winds mainly out of the west or northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with local gusts to 30 MPH, mainly in western Kings, western Fresno, and western Madera Counties. By Tuesday night, winds will decrease to 5 to 15 MPH with winds generally in the 5 to 12 MPH range Wednesday through Thursday.
Rain: Expect dry conditions indefinitely.
