Forecast

January 25, 2020/pm update

January 25, 2020

Summary: The low cloud deck has generally burned off from Fresno southward with pockets of low clouds remaining north of Fresno County.  Due to the evaporation of the low clouds, plenty of sunshine is evident this afternoon with temperatures running from 4 to 8 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago.

In the meantime, clouds are increasing over northern California ahead of an off shore trough of low pressure which will move through the valley by mid to late morning Sunday.  We may, though, see showers showing up sometime after midnight.  This is a fairly fast moving system so the precipitation will taper off Sunday afternoon with dry weather returning Sunday night.  the flow aloft behind this system will briefly be out of the northwest, generating upslope clouds against the valley facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains and, to a lesser extent, the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada, especially in Tulare County.  This will result in mostly cloudy conditions in Tulare and Kern Counties into Monday morning.

A flat zone of high pressure will stretch from the eastern Pacific and across California Monday through Wednesday while Pacific storms continue to ride over the top of the high and into the Pacific Northwest.  This will affect generally the northern ¼ of California.  By Wednesday night, a stronger ridge will be building further north and east, covering most of the western U.S. and off shore waters.  Temperatures during the second half of the week and into the weekend will rise to well above average.

Forecast: Increasing cloudiness tonight leading to a chance of light showers after midnight.  Light showers Sunday morning, tapering off Sunday afternoon.  Most of the showers will be north of Kern County.  Continued mostly cloudy in Tulare and Kern Counties Sunday night and Monday morning but partly cloudy with patchy fog elsewhere.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday afternoon through Wednesday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds.  Mostly clear Wednesday night through Saturday with widespread fog and low clouds during the night and morning hours.

Winds: Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH tonight then will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts Sunday through Sunday evening.  Winds Sunday night through Tuesday will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  Light showers are already showing up along the northern California coast and have spread into the Mount Shasta/Siskiyou region.  Light showers will begin to spread over the valley after midnight tonight, continuing on and off through Sunday morning and tapering off Sunday afternoon.  Precipitation amounts will be unimpressive with this event with most locations recording at or less than .10.  Locally more is possible in eastern Madera and Fresno Counties.  It’s possible Kern County may record just trace amounts to possibly a few hundredths.

After this system goes through, dry weather will return Sunday night and continue all of next week and, more than likely, through the following week, as well.

Frost Discussion:  All locations will be above 32 degrees tonight and each night for the remainder of the week and, if models are correct, well into next week, as well.
