January 25, 2020
Summary: A low overcast remained over much of the valley overnight, resulting in mild temperatures this morning with most locations in the upper 40s. The base of the overcast ranged from 2,900 feet over Lemoore to 3,900 feet over Bakersfield. The fact that the overcast is lifting is a good indication that it will dissipate later today. However, above the fog is a higher cloud deck ahead of an approaching trough of low pressure which will give a chance of light showers to the valley later tonight and Sunday. The main trough passage will occur during the late morning hours Sunday. Essentially, the further south you go, the weaker the dynamics with this system, so it’s possible some locations in the south valley, especially in Kern County, may not even see measurable precipitation.
A northwesterly flow will develop behind the trough, resulting in upslope cloud development against the valley facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains. This could result in some drizzle or even light rain near the base of the mountains Sunday afternoon and night. the air mass behind this incoming system is only marginally cooler, so the valley will remain free of frost for this upcoming week.
Monday through Wednesday will be characterized by a flat zone of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific extending inland over California and into the interior west. Pacific storms will ride up over the top of the high and into the Pacific Northwest. From Wednesday night through this coming weekend, an even stronger high will build further north, putting a clamp on the valley. Each day through the upcoming week will see fog and low clouds nights and mornings with afternoon clearing most days. Even the models going out through the first week of February are indicating the chance of precipitation is quite low with above average temperatures.
Forecast: Low overcast and fog this morning. Increasing cloudiness this afternoon. Mostly cloudy tonight and Sunday with a chance of showers after midnight, mainly north of Kern County. Light showers likely from Fresno County northward Sunday with a chance of light showers over Kings and Tulare Counties and a slight chance in Kern County. Mostly cloudy Sunday night through Monday morning with patchy fog Monday morning. mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Wednesday with considerable amounts of night and morning fog. Mostly clear Wednesday night through Saturday with extensive night and morning fog and low clouds.

Two Week Outlook: February 1 through February 7: This model is showing a more dominant ridge of high pressure over the eastern Pacific and California, resulting in generally above average temperatures. This pattern is not conducive for precipitation.
January: This model is rather inconclusive on precipitation and temperature trends. If anything, precipitation will be close to average with temperatures that are marginally above average. It does appear there will be potentially extended periods of dry weather, leading to episodes of fog and low clouds from time to time.
February, March, April: If this model has any kind of a grip on the situation, temperatures will run somewhat above average during the late winter/early spring period. This model would really dash the hopes of a wet winter as it does indicate below average rain for the three month period.
Winds: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.
Rain: The chance of light showers, mainly north of Kern County, will begin tonight and last possibly until 2:00 or 3:00pm Sunday afternoon. It appears the best chance of rain will be during the late morning hours when the actual trough will be overhead. Rainfall amounts from this anemic system will be generally at or less than .10. Locally more is possible but not likely. It’s possible no measurable rain will occur at all in portions of the south valley, especially in Kern County. This will be the last storm we’ll see for quite some time as a blocking ridge pattern will set up Sunday night, lasting through at least mid week with an even stronger high building further north Wednesday night through next weekend. Models going out through the first week in February are not encouraging for precipitation.
