February 3, 2020
Summary: Navelencia dropped to 32 degrees about 7:30 this evening. Ducor, Orange Cove, Lindcove, McFarland, and Terra Bella hit 32 degrees between 8:00 and 9:00pm. As of 10:00pm, Navelencia, which is typically a cold pocket, had dropped to 28. Most other locations were generally between 30 and 32 degrees with the exception of a few Kern County locations which were still in the mid 30s.
The rate of descent this evening is a little slower than I would have thought so this forecast will reflect slightly higher overnight lows, though still no picnic.
Look for the inversion to generally range between 3 to 5 degrees warmer at 34 feet.
The very coldest river bottom and other traditional frost pockets will chill down to 22 to 24 degrees tonight with most flat terrain acreage ranging from 24 to 26 degrees and hillsides in the upper 20s to possibly the lower 30s on higher hillsides.
Coming up on Wednesday morning, I still anticipate temperatures will be very similar, but a better inversion is expected.
Slow moderation in overnight lows will begin Thursday morning and beyond, which will be detailed in tomorrow morning’s report.
