April 25, 2020/report

April 25, 2020

Summary: The marine layer is something we have not talked about in recent months but will come more into play as we head into the warm and eventually hot season.  Currently, the marine layer at Monterey stands at 900 feet.  That’s much too shallow for that modified sea breeze to move very far inland.  A weak trough of low pressure is currently moving into the Pacific Northwest.  This will weaken the high over the next 36 hours, allowing a minor cooling trend as pressures fall marginally aloft.  The marine layer will respond accordingly, allowing a shallow intrusion of modified sea breeze to move down the valley later Sunday into Monday for the cooling trend.

That will be short lived, however, as high pressure aloft will rebound Monday night through Wednesday.  this will allow temperatures to exceed the 90 degree mark once again.  Models continue to indicate a trough of low pressure will move into the western U.S. beginning Thursday as the high finally shifts to the east.  It will more than likely be next weekend before temperatures drop to near seasonal values.  This trough will not be strong enough for precipitation.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Tuesday.  Mostly clear Tuesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: April 28 through May 4:  This model indicates a dominant ridge of upper level high pressure will be over the eastern Pacific and California, resulting in above average temperatures.  The chance of rain during this timeframe appears to be very low.

May:  The first month of the dry season will be typically dry, in other words this model is portraying near average precipitation for the month of May.  It also appears the trend of above average temperatures will continue for the month.

May, June, July:  Obviously, over the next 90 days precipitation will be largely nonexistent with the usual few exceptions, mainly during the month of May.  Models show the western half of the U.S. having generally above average temperatures.

Winds Discussion: Winds through Tuesday will be generally less than 7 MPH late evening through the early morning hours and 8 to 15 MPH during the later morning through early evening hours.
