June 2, 2020
Summary: There remains two main weather features to deal with. The first is a closed low located roughly 400 miles to the west/southwest of Santa Barbara. The second is upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest. The sounding overnight above Vandenburg indicated a southerly flow from 5,000 up to 30,000 feet. This same flow will maintain mid and high level clouds over central California from time to time. Even so, the low is projected to be forced a bit further off shore over the next 48 hours, allowing the southwestern high to expand into California. The result will be a return to triple digit temperatures Wednesday and Thursday.
On Thursday night and Friday, the low will begin to shift eastward in response to a trough of low pressure moving out of the Gulf of Alaska towards the Pacific Northwest. As the low moves inland Friday through southern California, there will be a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms over the mountains. The flow aloft will briefly become southeasterly Thursday night and Friday, which could conceivably nudge an isolated cell out over the valley floor, mainly in Kern County and along the Sierra Nevada foothills.
As the low moves inland, a strong push of marine air will fill the valley beginning Friday. A large low will center over the Pacific Northwest Saturday through Monday with a trough of low pressure extending southward into California. This will result in temperatures tumbling to below average. In fact, some models show temperatures struggling to reach 80 degrees on the valley floor, especially Sunday and Monday.
Upper level high pressure will begin to push in from the west Tuesday for the beginning of a warming trend. Some models are indicating yet another low will move into at least the Pacific Northwest late next week. This would keep temperatures at a moderate level.
Forecast: Partly cloudy and warmer through Thursday. Variable cloudiness Thursday night through Friday night with a slight chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly near the Sierra Nevada foothills and the base of the Tehachapi Mountains. Mostly clear and much cooler Saturday through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: June 8 through June 14: An early summer type pattern is evident on this model. Temperatures will rise to above average with dry conditions continuing.
June: The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California. The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day. This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.
June, July, August: What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry. Of course, this summer will be no exception. Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none. This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?
Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH through Thursday evening and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings. Winds late Thursday night and Friday will increase out of the west at 10 to 20 MPH with local gusts to 35 MPH along the west side, especially near the base of the Coast Range.
Rain Discussion: That low off the southern California coast will keep variable higher clouds in place through Thursday, but no rain. The low will open up Friday and move through southern California. The flow aloft will briefly be out of the southeast which could nudge an isolated shower or thunderstorm off the southern Sierra Nevada or the Kern County mountains Friday through Friday evening. However, the chance of measurable rain at any given location will remain very low. Expect dry weather over the weekend and all of next week.
