Forecast

June 5, 2020/report

June 5, 2020

Summary:  A very strong push of marine air is surging through the Delta and other gaps and passes along the Coast Range. Winds at Travis Air Force Base are out of the southwest, sustained at 24 MPH and gusting to 28.  Pacheco Pass is reporting winds sustained at 31, gusting to 46.  The catalyst of all this is a low pressure system roughly 300 miles off the southern California coast which is making its move eastward.  Temperatures this afternoon will be anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday.

As the low moves inland tonight and Saturday morning, the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase along the southern Sierra Nevada with the possibility of isolated activity over the Kern County mountains.

As the low moves inland, the winds aloft will briefly become out of the southeast which could nudge an isolated shower or thunderstorm out over the valley floor.  The chance of measurable rain at any given location is very low with the highest risk being along the base of the Sierra Nevada and the Tehachapi Mountains.

As this low moves inland, another large area of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest with a strong trough moving into northern and central California Saturday through Monday.  Forecast highs are only in the mid 70s for Sunday, a drastic change from 105 yesterday.  A flat zone of upper level  high pressure will set up a warming trend, allowing temperatures to move into the mid to upper 90s by mid week.

Models are showing another low moving into northern California next weekend for our next cooling trend.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness through Saturday morning.  there will be a slight chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and the Tehachapi Mountains this afternoon through Saturday morning.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday afternoon through Sunday, breezy, and much cooler.  Mostly clear Sunday night and on through Friday of next week.

Two Week Outlook: June 10 through June 16:  An early summer type pattern is evident on this model.  Temperatures will rise to above average with dry conditions continuing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: Along the west side, especially along the Interstate 5 corridor, winds will increase mainly out of west today at 15 to 35 MPH with stronger gusts. Elsewhere, winds will begin to increase out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts.  Winds tonight and at times through Sunday will occasionally be out of the northwest at 15 to 25 MPH with local gusts to 35 MPH possible.  Winds Sunday night and Monday will decrease to 8 to 15 MPH.

Rain Discussion: As low pressure off the southern California coast moves inland tonight and Saturday morning, scattered showers and thunderstorms will break out along the Sierra Nevada with isolated activity over the Kern County mountains. Winds aloft will briefly be out of the southeast which could nudge isolated showers or thunderstorms out over the valley floor, mainly ear the foothills.  One high resolution model shows Bakersfield with .01. I must emphasize the chance of measurable rain at any given location remains very low.  Dry weather will return later Saturday and beyond for the valley with dry weather continuing for all of next week.
