Forecast

June 8, 2020/report

June 8, 2020

Summary:  Temperatures at this hour are as cold as you’ll ever see them this late in the season.  As of 6:00am, every single ag station from Madera County through Kern County was below the 50 degree mark.  Lindcove was reporting 41 degrees and Orosi 43.  Hard to believe just a few days ago we had highs of 105!

The freezing level over Oakland taken a short time ago was only 8,500 feet.  That, however, will rise rapidly as upper level high pressure off shore will replace that cold trough of low pressure which now stretches from Montana southward into northern Arizona.  Readings will rise from the mid 70s yesterday into the lower 80s today with temperatures pressing the century mark again Wednesday and Thursday at the hottest locations.

Winds today will also die off.  Yesterday afternoon, there was an 18 millibar difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas.  That has decreased to 8 millibars at this hour.

Upper level high pressure will dominate our weather from Tuesday through Thursday, however the roller coaster ride in temperatures will continue as models still indicate another significant trough of low pressure will move in from the Gulf of Alaska Friday.  Another round of gusty winds will commence as a strong surge of marine air moves inland.  As pressures fall over the interior, gusty winds can be expected Friday through Saturday.  Some models are portraying temperatures falling back into the mid to upper 70s Saturday.  As the trough moves through, showers will break out over the southern Sierra Nevada Friday and Saturday afternoons, but no precipitation is expected over the valley floor.

The next ridge of high pressure will begin to build in from the west next Sunday and Monday for our next warming trend.

Forecast: Clear skies through Friday.  Mostly clear Friday night through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: June 15 through June 21:  An early summer type pattern is evident on this model.  Temperatures will rise to above average with dry conditions continuing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: Winds will decrease today to 8 to 15 MPH, mainly out of the northwest.  Winds tonight through Thursday will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH and generally variable to 8 MPH during the night and morning hours with periods of near calm conditions.  Expect another round of strong, gusty winds Friday night and Saturday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
