Forecast

June 9, 2020/report

June 9, 2020

Summary:  The latest sounding above Oakland indicated a freezing level of 12,800 feet, up from 8,900 feet 24 hours ago.  Sandburg at an elevation of 4,100 feet is reporting a temperature 13 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago while Blue Canyon at 5,600 feet is 16 degrees warmer.

In the meantime, the marine layer along the coast has been crushed down to 500 feet at Monterey.  Obviously, these are all indicative of a warming trend as upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific begins to shift inland over California.  This will result in a rapid warming trend as most locations eclipse the 90 degree mark this afternoon.  This latest warm up will peak on Thursday when  hottest locations eclipse the century mark.

Models continue to show the development of a low in the Gulf of Alaska and indicate it will move inland through California Friday and Saturday.  the first phase of this will result in a strong push of marine air through the Delta and other gaps and passes along the Coast Range for another round of occasionally gusty winds Friday through Saturday.  much cooler air will move in aloft.  For now, no precipitation is expected on the valley floor, however convective showers and thunderstorms will certainly be possible over the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada.  Temperatures will plummet from near 100 Thursday to the lower 80s Saturday.  As you might have already guessed, the next zone of high pressure will begin to shift inland next Sunday and early next week for a warming trend.

Later next week, it appears our pattern will be a battle zone between low pressure off the coast of the Pacific Northwest and strong upper level high pressure centered over the Four Corners region.

Forecast: Clear skies through Saturday.  Mostly clear Saturday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: June 16 through June 22:  This model indicates upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific extending through California will result in somewhat above average temperatures with dry conditions prevailing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: During the afternoon and evening, winds will be generally out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH.  During the night and morning hours, winds will be variable to 8 MPH with near calm conditions through Thursday.  Late Thursday night or friday morning, winds will increase out of the west at 10 to 12 MPH.  Local gusts to 35 MPH will be possible along the west side and locally elsewhere.  Late Friday through Saturday, winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH at times with stronger gusts.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
