Forecast

June 11, 2020/report

June 11, 2020

Summary: Upper level high pressure is now shifting into the interior west.  However, central California will be on the back side of this high for one more day, allowing temperatures to spike into the lower 100s this afternoon.  Low pressure now extends from the Gulf of Alaska to off the northern California coast.  Even though the marine layer is still only 1,000 feet deep, it will rapidly deepen over the next 24 hours and will surge inland, initially through the Delta then over gaps and passes along the Coast Range Friday.  Already this morning, winds in the Delta are sustained at 18 MPH out of the southwest.

Most models show a secondary low forming just off the northern California coast Friday then move it inland Friday night and Saturday.  scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will spread down the Sierra Nevada from Sequoia Park northward Friday afternoon and evening.  There will be some increase in cloud cover over the valley floor Friday night, but no precipitation is anticipated.

Much cooler conditions will begin Friday but more especially Saturday when temperatures will struggle into the lower 80s.  Low pressure will move northeastward into the northern Rockies Sunday.  There will be a big low blanketing the Pacific Northwest and off shore waters Monday and for most of next week while a weak zone of upper level high pressure dominates California and off shore with a dry westerly flow prevailing.  Temperatures for much of next week will be fairly close to average each day.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Friday morning.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday afternoon and night.  Mostly clear Saturday and on through Thursday of next week.

Two Week Outlook: June 18 through June 24:  This model indicates upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific extending through California will result in somewhat above average temperatures with dry conditions prevailing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: Winds today will be generally at or less than 4 MPH.  Winds tonight through Friday will initially be out of the west at 10 to 20 MPH.  Gusts to 35 MPH are possible along the west side with gusts to 25 MPH possible elsewhere.  Winds Friday night through Saturday evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH at times with stronger gusts.  Winds late Saturday night and Sunday will be generally at or less than 12 MPH.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
