June 15, 2020/report

June 15, 2020

Summary: Temperatures at this hour are running anywhere from 3 to 8 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago.  The marine layer along the coast has peeled back to roughly 1,000 feet.  Winds at this hour in the Delta are light as a weak ridge of high pressure temporarily moves overhead today.

A trough of low pressure and its associated cold front are moving into the Pacific Northwest.  Light showers have spread as far south as the California/Oregon border.  This trough will  move through northern and central California tonight and Tuesday morning, resulting in a rapid deepening of the marine layer.  The marine layer will surge in beginning this evening, continuing into Tuesday morning.  Gusty winds will push inland from the west then will be northwesterly tonight and Tuesday, resulting in several degrees of cooling.

The trough will move into the interior west at midweek, allowing a flat zone of upper level high pressure to begin to push in from the west.  This will result in a weak westerly flow aloft along with a warming trend.  Warmest locations will be pushing the century mark this coming weekend.

Medium range models aren’t too exciting.  Upper level high pressure will be the dominant force as we move into the calendar summer.

Forecast: Mostly clear today.  Partly cloudy tonight and Tuesday morning.  mostly clear Tuesday afternoon and on through Monday of next week.

Two Week Outlook: June 22 through June 28:  This model indicates upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific extending through California will result in somewhat above average temperatures with dry conditions prevailing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH today.  Winds this evening will increase out of the west at 10 to 20 MPH.  Local gusts to 35 MPH are possible along the west side.  Winds later tonight through Tuesday will be generally out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with locally stronger gusts.  Winds will decrease and become light and variable Tuesday night.  Winds Wednesday through Thursday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH, decreasing to light and variable during the night and  morning hours.
