Forecast

June 17, 2020/report

June 17, 2020

Summary: The low pressure system that lowered temperatures into the mid 80s yesterday continues to move eastward and is now centered over eastern Idaho.  It will move into southern Canada Thursday.  The valley is pooled with modified marine air,  so even though upper level high pressure is beginning to shift into California, temperature increases today will be modest with most locations coming in at just below the 90 degree mark.

Warming is, however, taking place in the upper levels of the atmosphere.  The freezing level taken above Oakland a short time ago has jumped back up to 15,500 feet.  The strong onshore flow of the past 24 hours will end later today, allowing significant warming to begin Thursday.  By Friday, warmest locations will be toying with the century mark.  That will be followed by five days of triple digit temperatures as high pressure moves overhead.

The next cooling trend could begin as early as Wednesday or possibly Thursday of next week as a weak trough of low pressure moves through.  On paper, this doesn’t look like a significant feature, however temperatures should lower into at least the mid to upper 90s.

Forecast: Clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Wednesday.
