Summary: The center of circulation of a strong ridge of upper level high pressure is southwest of San Diego. A ridge extends from that high into the Pacific Northwest. The marine layer is fairly typical for the latter part of June with a depth of 1,900 feet at Monterey. There is only a minimal amount of modified sea breeze moving through the Delta as winds there are pegged at 17 MPH out of the southwest. The difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas is roughly 3.5 millibars, which is not enough to tug that sea breeze inland. The freezing level has now jumped up to 16,500 feet above Oakland and 17,100 feet above San Diego, indicative of that warm bubble of subsiding air.
Triple digits will be a way of life through the work week as persistent upper level high pressure continues. Over the weekend, a fairly significant area of low pressure will drop southward from western Canada and into the Pacific Northwest. Saturday appears to be the transition day between the current heat wave and much cooler weather early next week. The marine layer will rapidly deepen Friday night, surging inland Saturday. it’s possible that, by early next week, readings will only top out in the mid 80s.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Friday. Mostly clear Friday night through Tuesday.
