Summary: Today will be day 5 of triple digit heat on the valley floor. There are some minor deviations in the overall pattern, however. There is a weak trough of low pressure over the Great Basin which is oriented northeast to southwest with the far western side of the trough hanging into northern and northcentral California. The combination of intense daytime heating and this trough should trigger isolated thunderstorms over the back country of the Sierra Nevada. Also, the marine layer along the coast has deepened to 2,200 feet at Monterey. However, surface pressure differences are not strong enough to tug that modified sea breeze into the valley. In fact, winds at the Delta were out of the southwest at just 12 MPH. the air mass remains very warm. Sandberg at the 4,100 foot elevation was a balmy 72 degrees while Bear Peak at 8,200 feet was reporting a temp of 65.
As this weak trough moves eastward Friday night, high pressure will temporarily firm up, possibly making Saturday the hottest day in this series. Some models have hotter locations in the 105 to 108 degree range. Models continue to show a low center dropping from western Canada into the Pacific Northwest Saturday. by Sunday, the center of this low will be over eastern Oregon with a trough extending into northern and central California. A strong surge of marine air will push through the Delta and eventually over the entire coast range and into the valley by Saturday evening. Strong gusty winds, especially along the west side, will commence. Don’t be surprised to see dust in the air Saturday evening and night.
Drastically cooler weather will be the result as that sea breeze moves in aloft, along with a strong onshore flow pushing more and more sea breezes inland. Temperatures from at least Fresno northward may not reach 90 degrees Sunday with readings of no more than the mid 80s Monday.
The low will move into the Rocky Mountain region Tuesday, allowing a flat zone of high pressure to move in from the west. Models indicate a weak trough will remain over the Northwest, which will prevent the high from pushing temperatures then anywhere near what they currently are. It appears temperatures most of next week will be in the mid to upper 90s, which is close to seasonal for the first week in July.
Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Saturday. mostly clear, breezy, and much cooler Saturday night through Monday. Mostly clear Monday night through Thursday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook: July 2 through July 8: This model is indicating a fairly typical summer pattern with high pressure dominating over the eastern Pacific, extending over California into the Desert Southwest. Temperatures will be marginally above average with typical dry conditions continuing.
June: The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California. The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day. This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.
June, July, August: What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry. Of course, this summer will be no exception. Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none. This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?
Winds Discussion: Winds afternoons and evenings will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 7 MPH with occasional calm periods. By late Saturday afternoon, winds will increase out of the west at 15 to 25 MPH with gusts to near 35 MPH possible, especially in western Fresno County and much of Kings County but locally elsewhere. Winds Saturday night and Monday will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts.
Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
