July 1, 2020

Summary:  The marine layer along the coast deepened somewhat overnight.  The latest sounding at Monterey indicates a depth of 2,100 feet.  There is a weak push of modified marine air through the Delta as winds at Travis Air Force Base were sustained at 17 MPH at last report.  Infrared satellite imagery shows the coastal low cloud deck approaching Pacheco Pass.  We may see a minor influx of modified sea breeze later this afternoon, mainly in the northern half of the valley, lowering temperatures slightly.  The remainder of the central and south valley will continue to be in the mid to upper 90s through Friday.

In the broad picture, low pressure extends from British Columbia southeastward into Wyoming.  The flow aloft above central California is now westerly, which is an extremely dry flow this time of year.  Over the Fourth of July weekend, upper level high pressure over Texas will retrograde into the Desert Southwest while persistent low pressure remains over the Pacific Northwest.  This is a common pattern for early July.  Temperatures over the weekend will be determined by a juggling act between the low to our north and the low over the Desert Southwest.

Over the weekend and into next week, a dry southwesterly flow will prevail between these two systems.  Barring something unforeseen, temperatures over the holiday weekend will be near the century mark.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Saturday.  Clear skies will continue Saturday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 7 through July 13:  This model is indicating a fairly typical summer pattern with high pressure dominating over the eastern Pacific, extending over California into the Desert Southwest.  Temperatures will be marginally above average with typical dry conditions continuing.

July:  This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks.  The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil.  Average precipitation for the month is .01.

July, August, September:  This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret.  July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics.  This out look appears fairly typical.  Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.

Winds Discussion: Winds later this afternoon and tonight, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor, will increase out of the west or northwest at 10 to 15  MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH.   otherwise, during the afternoons and evenings, winds will be mostly out of the northwest at around 5 to 12 MPH.  During the night and morning hours, winds will generally range between 3 and 7 MPH with periods of calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
