July 9, 2020
Summary: The weather pattern is slowly evolving to one which will lead us into at least a week’s worth of classic valley heat. Upper level high pressure is currently centered over southern New Mexico and is slowly expanding northward and westward. The freezing level earlier this morning above Oakland was just under 16,000 feet. The freezing level over San Diego, closer to the building high, was 18,100 feet, the highest I’ve seen it so far this summer. Temperatures over the weekend will push 120 over the lower deserts and the Desert Southwest. Even here in the valley, hottest locations Sunday and Monday will be pushing 110.
The marine layer along the coast is fairly stagnant at 1,100 feet at Monterey. Currently, no sea breeze is moving through Pacheco Pass or even through the Delta.
Over the weekend, the high’s center of circulation will park over the Four Corners region, setting up a south/southwest flow. A limited amount of monsoon moisture will move around the western side of the high and into southern and central California by early next week. For now, however, it appears the high will be strong enough to maintain a cap which would inhibit thunderstorm development over the Sierra Nevada and the mountains and deserts of southern California.
Temperatures should begin to moderate by next Thursday as a trough of low pressure drops southward into the Rocky Mountain region, suppressing the high into the southern Plains.
Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Sunday. Mostly clear and hot Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: July 16 through July 22: This model shows a trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest while upper level high pressure remains over the Desert Southwest. This pattern allows near average temperatures for mid July with typical dry conditions continuing.
July: This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks. The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil. Average precipitation for the month is .01.
July, August, September: This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret. July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics. This out look appears fairly typical. Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.
Winds Discussion: Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH with locally stronger gusts through Sunday. winds during the night and morning hours will be generally variable to around 7 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
