July 14, 2020/report

July 14, 2020

Summary:  The depth of the marine layer has now increased to 3,000 feet and is currently surging through the Delta and other gaps and passes along the Coast Range.  Winds at Travis Air Force Base are currently sustained at 22 MPH, gusting to 36.  At Pacheco Pass, winds are currently gusting to 32 MPH.  we’re beginning to enter the period of the year that tends to be the  hottest time frame, so this will be a nice reprieve with triple digits returning as early as Thursday.

Currently, low pressure stretches from the Pacific Northwest into the northern Midwest.  Upper level high pressure is now centered over west Texas.  Models are also indicating the formation of a small low center off the southern California coast tonight and Wednesday.  however, the west Texas high will begin to expand back west again, shoving that low further off shore and beginning the next round of triple digits which will last several days.

As the high expands back towards California, the flow aloft will become out of the south.  Models do show a limited amount of monsoon  moisture moving into central and southern California for the possibility of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada this weekend and into next week.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Friday.  Mostly clear Friday night through Tuesday with occasional high clouds.

Two Week Outlook:  July 19 through July 25:  This model shows a trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest while upper level high pressure remains over the Desert Southwest.  This pattern allows marginally above average temperatures for mid July with typical dry conditions continuing.

July:  This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks.  The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil.  Average precipitation for the month is .01.

July, August, September:  This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret.  July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics.  This out look appears fairly typical.  Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.

Winds Discussion: Locally gusty winds will continue along the west side today, gusting locally to near 25 MPH.  Elsewhere, from late morning through the evening, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts.  Winds Wednesday through Friday afternoons will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH with light and variable winds during the night and morning hours.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
