Forecast

July 20,2020/report

July 20, 2020

Summary:  As is typical, this will be a very quiet weather week in central California.  The various players are generally slow and weak.  Currently, weak upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest is the most dominant feature, however there is a weak upper low off the northern California coast.

The marine layer stands right at 2,000 feet this  morning and is moving through the Delta where winds at Travis Air Force Base are sustained at 24 MPH, gusting to 32. Winds at Pacheco Pass are currently gusting to 23 MPH.  this should be enough to lower temperatures a degree or two today with most locations falling into the upper 90s. the low off the northern California coast should begin to move inland Wednesday, further increasing the onshore flow and allowing more modified marine air to pool on the valley floor.  This will move readings down into the mid 90s.

By Friday, the low will have moved into the interior west, however models indicate a weak trough will linger over northern and central California and maintaining seasonal temperatures.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Thursday.  Mostly clear Thursday night through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 25 through July 31:  This model is indicating California will be sandwiched between low pressure over the Pacific Northwest and upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  Typically, this results in a dry southwesterly flow and near average temperatures.

July:  This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks.  The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil.  Average precipitation for the month is .01.

July, August, September:  This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret.  July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics.  This out look appears fairly typical.  Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.

Winds Discussion: Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH.  Locally stronger gusts can be expected along the west side through Tuesday.  Winds Wednesday and Thursday will be either out of the west or northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH possible along the west side, mainly down the Interstate 5 corridor.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
