Forecast

July 31, 2020/report

July 31, 2020

Summary:  Central California remains on the northwest periphery of a very strong high located over Arizona and southern California.  The freezing level is about as high as I’ve seen it all summer and stands at 17,800 feet above Oakland.  For the second time this summer, hottest locations over the lower deserts of southern California will hit the 120 degree mark as the heat wave peaks.

The marine layer along the coast is roughly the same this morning and stands at 1,800 feet.  The modified sea breeze is moving through the Delta as winds there are currently sustained at 22 MPH, gusting to 28.  Locations from Merced County northward should remain in the upper 90s courtesy of the blessing of that sea breeze.  The central and south valley, however, will remain in the lower 100s through Sunday.

The high will begin to flatten out Sunday night and Monday in response to a trough of low pressure moving into the Pacific Northwest and northern California.  The marine layer will deepen and surge inland, moving the entire valley back into double digits.  The trough will be reinforced about Wednesday, so with a little luck, temperatures will drop into the mid 90s which for early August is a rather nice change.  The flow aloft will remain out of the southwest, keeping skies virtually cloudless with a very dry air mass.

Forecast:  Clear and hot through Sunday.  Clear with a slow cooling trend Monday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 6 through August 12:  This model is indicating a weak trough of low pressure will be dominant along the west coast, resulting in near to marginally below average temperatures.  A dry southwesterly flow will continue.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion: Winds through this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts, mainly along the west side.  Winds Saturday through Monday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH, becoming light and variable during the overnight hours.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
