Forecast

August 3, 2020/report

August 3, 2020

Summary:  With a little luck, this will be the last day of triple digits, especially north of Kern County.  The marine layer is currently quite shallow at 1,000 feet.  That will begin to change by this evening as a weak trough off the northern California coast begins to push inland Tuesday.  This will suppress strong high pressure over the southwestern U.S. and southern California southward and eastward, slowly putting an end to the blistering heat over the deserts of southern California.

As pressures slowly fall aloft and a stronger onshore flow develops, modified marine air will spill down the valley.  Gusty winds will increase along the west side this evening, especially below the gaps and passes along the Coast Range.  Elevated wind conditions can be expected in the valley tonight and at times through Friday.

A trough of low pressure will remain over northern and central California through Friday with only low to mid 90s anticipated through midweek on.  Over the weekend, upper level high pressure over the Texas and New Mexico region will again expand towards southern California.  By Sunday, temperatures will be near seasonal averages, rising to marginally above average by early next week.

The flow aloft will remain out of the west or southwest, so the usual dry, dusty conditions will continue for the next week, at least.

Forecast:  Clear and hot today.   Clear skies tonight through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 10 through August 16:  This model is indicating a weak trough of low pressure will be dominant along the west coast, resulting in near to marginally below average temperatures.  A dry southwesterly flow will continue.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion: Winds through midafternoon will be generally at or less than 12 MPH.  By this evening, winds will begin to increase along the west side out of the west to northwest at 15 to 25 MPH.  gusts over 30 MPH will be possible, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Elsewhere, tonight through Wednesday, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts during the afternoons and evenings.  Winds Wednesday night through Thursday will continue to be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
