August 4, 2020/report

August 4, 2020

Summary:  The latest sounding at Monterey indicates the marine layer has doubled in depth over the past 24 hours.  It has now risen to 2,000 feet.  Winds at Pacheco Pass have increased to 20 MPH while at Travis Air Force Base, winds are out of the southwest at 21, gusting to 27 MPH.  This is due to a weak low center located just off the northern California coast.  It will move into northern and central California Wednesday through Thursday.

North of Kern County, highs this afternoon will not reach the century mark and even in Kern County, only the hottest locations will tease with the 100 degree mark.  As pressures fall aloft, and the onshore flow continues to increase, more and more modified marine air will move down the valley and temperatures by Wednesday will fall to below average, continuing through Friday.  Thursday looks to be the coolest day in this series as some locations may not even reach the 90 degree mark.

This is August, and as we know, these cool downs don’t typically last very long.  Temperatures over the weekend will again begin to climb as upper level high pressure, which is currently being forced into Texas, again begins to expand into the Desert Southwest and then into southern California by Sunday.

Forecast:  Clear today.   Clear skies tonight through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 10 through August 16:  This model is indicating a weak trough of low pressure will be dominant along the west coast, resulting in near to marginally below average temperatures.  A dry southwesterly flow will continue.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September, we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion: Through Thursday, there will be periods of winds mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH.  gusts to near 30 MPH are possible along the west side, especially along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Winds will decrease Thursday night, becoming light and variable Friday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
