August 6, 2020/report

August 6, 2020

Summary:  Temperatures at this hour are running anywhere from 3 to 8 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago.  The valley is completely pooled with modified marine air.  For the second morning in a row, satellite imagery shows coastal low clouds pushing up against the last range of mountains separating the valley from the Coast Range.  A weak trough of low pressure now extends from British Columbia southward into southern California with a dry southwest flow aloft.  This trough wil weak and may move off shore by Friday.  This would allow high pressure now covering Texas and New Mexico to begin to expand back towards the west coast.  This high is not especially impressive; however, as pressures rise aloft and the marine layer mixes out, temperatures will return to seasonal Saturday.  hottest locations will hover near the century mark Saturday and Sunday.  By the middle of next week, a new trough of low pressure will begin to push into northern California.  For now, it looks like this feature will result in only a minor cooling trend.  Some models are showing a stronger trough heading for the California coast a week from Saturday.

Forecast:  Clear skies and cooler through Friday.  Clear skies will continue Friday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 12 through August 18:  This model is indicating a weak trough of low pressure will be dominant along the west coast, resulting in near to marginally below average temperatures.  A dry southwesterly flow will continue.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September, we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH through today with local gusts to near 25, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Winds Friday through Saturday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and 3 to 6 MPH nights and early mornings with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
